The mountain refuges are not guarded in winter, but in keeping with Savoyard tradition, they do have a section open to adventurers.
Do you feel up to crossing the snow-covered mountain pastures for an exceptional evening?
A night in a refuge is a chance to get away from civilisation, to find yourself in a natural environment where wildlife reclaims its rights, to discover a sparkling starry sky devoid of light pollution, and to enjoy the authentic atmosphere of a fondue with mountain dwellers in search of adventure.
So much for the idyllic side of the refuge surrounded by little ibexes and blue flowers, now you need to bear in mind that spending a night in an unguarded refuge also means :
A hike of about 3 hours each way, with a heavy rucksack loaded down with food, sleeping bag and water.
Everyone pitching in to help with the chores: cooking, washing up, tidying up, etc.
Minimal facilities: dry toilets, no shower, need to melt snow to get water.
A wood-burning stove that goes out of fashion as the night goes on: it stings in the morning!
Some promiscuity in the dormitories: No differentiation between men and women, there's ALWAYS someone snoring (me in this case).
Respect for others: You don't get drunk until 2am when two climbers have to get up at 4am to tackle a peak.
If these terms seem acceptable to you, then you're in for an experience that will stay with you for the rest of your life!
